NSW Government pledges $145 million to strengthen building standards

The NSW Government has committed $145 million to Building Commission NSW to restore confidence and quality across the state’s construction sector. Included in the 2024–25 State Budget, the funding will modernise and digitise the Commission’s systems, enabling more targeted inspections and improved compliance with building standards.

“This investment over the next four years gives the Commission the resources it needs to maintain inspections and uphold building quality across NSW,” said James Sherrard, NSW Building Commissioner. “It also supports legislative reform and industry education, ensuring the sector can continue to improve into the future.”

Established in 2023, Building Commission NSW employs 450 staff, including inspectors and legal experts. Last year, it conducted thousands of site inspections, issuing 455 orders and expanding programs in regional and rural areas. The funding will also support joint task forces with agencies such as Fair Trading, ASIC and the NSW State Coroner to strengthen enforcement across jurisdictions.

Education remains a core focus. Over 20,000 industry participants attended Commission courses last year, with 16 new programs planned covering electrical and air conditioning standards, asbestos, silica and more.

“Building quality is a top priority for the Minns Government,” said Anoulack Chanthivong, Minister for Building. “Ensuring homes, whether apartments or standalone houses, meet the highest standards is essential for supporting safe, sustainable housing across NSW.”
