Restart NSW: powering productivity and community infrastructure

The NSW Government’s Restart NSW Fund continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the state’s infrastructure landscape, more than a decade after its establishment in 2011. Created to support the delivery of high-priority infrastructure, the fund is designed to drive long-term economic growth, productivity and lasting community benefit across New South Wales.

Supported by the Government’s asset recycling program, Restart NSW reinvests proceeds from the sale or lease of state assets into new infrastructure projects. This approach ensures capital is continually redirected into initiatives that strengthen transport networks, community facilities and essential public services, while stimulating local economies.

As of June 2024, Restart NSW funding has been committed to more than 817 local projects, representing a total investment of $2.47 billion. More than 660 projects have been completed or formally closed, with a further 157 currently in planning or delivery. Many of these projects are now delivering tangible benefits to communities across metropolitan, regional and rural NSW.

Restart NSW operates under the Restart NSW Fund Act 2011, with Infrastructure NSW responsible for assessing and recommending projects. A rigorous Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) framework ensures that each project delivers value for money, with benefits exceeding delivery costs. Importantly, 30 per cent of Restart NSW funding is targeted toward regional and rural areas outside Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, reinforcing the program’s commitment to balanced, statewide growth.
